With "Stagnated Existence" Dutch brutal death metal combo Disavowed expand on the sound of their succesful 2001 Unique Leader debut "Perceptive Deception". Still the band practices a highly lethal form of US death metal, akin to the likes of Suffocation, mid era Dying Fetus and (early) Pyrexia – but Disavowed add their own touch to the proceedings, resulting in a pleasant listen that, while maintaining their tried and true formula, is a great departure from the norm that usually plague bands of this ilk. Frontman Robbe Kok has a nicely low growl, much alike to Iniquity or country mates Caedere. Drummer Romain Goulon (Arsebreed) provides the tracks with a tight knit framework of fills, rolls and blasts, without ever saturating or drowning in excess. Daniel "Daan" Van Der Broek and Gerben van der Bij lay down a landslide of technical riffs that thrust, pound and hammer with enough groove to appease both the groove - as the technical fans. The bass by Nils Berndsen is clearly audible and his interesting lines give this record an old school feeling. Produced at Excess Studio, Rotterdam (Detonation, Emeth, Pyaemia, etc) "Stagnated Existence" boasts a high quality production job that accentuates the bottom end groove a record like this needs, while retaining a pristine level of clarity without sacrificing any of the grittiness in the process. Artwork and lay-out by Pär Olofsson (Odious Mortem, Spawn Of Possession, Psycroptic) are superb and give Disavowed a post-modern edge while fitting flawlessly with the band's psychological subject matter.
