Louisiana based Catholicon are veterans of the American black metal scene, and 'Treatise on the Abyss' stands statement to just that. Fusing the best of brutal US death metal with the frozen riffing and eerie atmospheres of (early) Scandinavian black metal, they manage to bring together two unlikely genres in a very convincing manner. Catholicon's blistering attack of blackened death metal particularly shines in the way they apply keyboards in their sound. Pretty reminiscent of the early Scandinavian progenitors the keyboards never dominate the whole, but add a sweltering, oppressive atmosphere which recalls classic (early) Emperor and Satyricon. On the other hand, the death metal part of their sound is vintage underground US death metal with low pig-style vocals and disjointed, chaotic song structures which hammer down with utmost relentlessness. With a fitting production which retains enough clarity and heaviness to make the death metal part of the equation work; yet preserving a certain degree of grittiness to appeal to the black metal crowd. The artwork and lay-out are typically by the black metal theme book and make Catholicon one of the better current-day US black metal bands. "Treatise on the Abyss" is a haunting attack on the senses that will appeal in equal measure to the death metal – as the black metal fanatics. Those who thought Goatwhore was amongst the only of elite black metal units are advised to check out this offering. This album comes highly recommended for those who like a potent, expertly executed genre cross-over.
