This is the third album for Brazilian death metal combo Mental Horror, who are now featuring ex-Rebaelliun drummer Sandro Moreira. ‘Denying the Scars’ starts off with a riff frighteningly close to Deicide’s classic ‘Christ Denied’ track. Similarly, midway ‘Sentenced to Believe’ a riff pops up that is very close to Metallica’s ‘Shortest Straw’ track. Frontman Adriano Martini (guitars) shares vocal duties with bassist Cézar China Meirelles and while this doesn’t result in Hate Eternal like rapid trade-offs or Nile like interactions Mental Horror do build up tension in between vocal parts. See the echoing primal growls in ‘Haunted’ for examples of that. Moreira’s work behind the kit is relentless, yet he lends the material an air of openness by not trying to dominate every single segment. Like fellow country men Krisiun, Mental Horror delivers a number of scorching, epic leads on this record, resulting in an old school atmosphere of familiarty. In comparison to 2004’s “Abyss Of Hypocrisy” this album is relatively slower with a much better contrast between high speed - and mid paced sections. Additionally, the record comes with a high quality production that gives each instrument its required space without compromising any of its sheer intensity and blunt heaviness. The artwork is chaotic and primal in its sheer savagery, fitting this band like a glove. Mental Horror has possibly delivered the strongest album out of their career with “Blemished Redemption”. Not for the faint of heart or the easily offended, but if Brazilian tornado styled death metal is your thing, you can’t go wrong with this record.
