Three years after the formidable "Rise to Power" Florida death metal veterans Monstrosity return with another caustic slab of technical death metal. Despite half of the last line-up's departure fouding member/drummer Lee Harrison has delivered another album of absolutely stunning material that will leave the competition in ruin and raise the bar for domestic and international death metal. New frontman/vocalist Mike Hrubovcak (Divine Rapture, Imperial Crystalline Entombment, Vile) - who supersedes ex-Eulogy growler Jason Avery - is his usual self delivering a spirited, versatile performance that is easily on par with former Monstrosity vocalist George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher in sheer intensity. Of the ten tracks present on this record the band show of their masterful songwriting skills in a number of ways, either through awe-inspiring technicality ('Sacred Oblivion'), groove ('Apostles of the Endless Night') or atmosphere ('the Inhuman Race') - as a whole "Spiritual Apocalypse" is testament to perseverance and old school ethics, combining catchy brutal songwriting, technical brilliance with spirited performances that easily sets Monstrosity apart from the countless pretenders to the throne in their chosen genre. Recorded at Morrisound Studios the disc features guest appearances from luminaries such as Kelly Shaefer (Atheist), Matt LaPorte (Jon Olivas Pain, Circle II Circle), John Zahner (Savatage, Crimson Glory), Jason Suecof (Capharnaum), and James Malone (Arsis). If this album doesn't establish this band in the mainstream death metal consciousness, I don't know what will. This is an album not to be missed by any serious death metal afficiniado.
