This is the second DVD for Florida death metal veterans Deicide after 2005's "When London Burns". "Doomsday LA" was recorded at the Knitting Factory on November 10, 2006 on the band's American tour in support of their "The Stench Of Redemption" record. The 19 track setlist sees Deicide going through their well-known and expected classics ('Dead by Dawn', 'Trifixion', 'Once Upon the Cross', 'Serpents Of the Light' etc) and debuting material of their most recent offering. The set is captured energetic with multiple cameras, providing each band member with equal screen time. In the new tracks the cameras focus on guitarist duo Jack Owen (ex-Cannibal Corpse) and Ralph Santolla (ex-Death, Iced Earth) during the extended solo sections these cuts provide. The epic new material sits surprisingly well next to Deicide's previously no-frills straightforward US death metal and the band delivers both new and old material in high spirit and conviction. The sound is however not as good as on the "When London Burns" DVD. I'm not sure whether the mix for the earlier DVD has been treated in a studio afterwards, but "Doomsday LA" sounds too compressed for its own good, thus panning the massive sound the band produces on stage. Additionally, there's a number of interesting extras to found on this disc. An in-depth interview with all the band members offers some interesting insights into the new line-up and the band's rejuvenated spirit. There's the two promo clips for this record, including the controversial 'Homage For Satan' and the live capture of 'Desecration'. With the Hate Eternal DVD "The Perilous Fight" Earache Records has set a benchmark for their own DVDs on a level of visuals and audio, it's really a shame that this new Deicide DVD isn't entirely able to live up to that established standard. Other than that, this is a great live document that will remain to stand tall for years to come.
