Reprisal Scars is a Gothenburg death metal from Finland, with "Done Is Done" they're up to their third demo, so far. While they are more than technically proficient, cunning songwriters; it's the longevity of the genre that's working to their disadvantage. With only the pioneers of this genre still being around, it's very hard to young band to easily follow in their footsteps or step out of their long and storied shadows. The riffs are of the (early) In Flames kind with enough melodic leverage yet remaining at a respectable brutal level. The drums follow with the riffs and offer nothing but basic, unenthusiastic patterns. Vocally, Reprisal Scars has a definite forte as their vocalist is expressive and able to accentuate his strong points.The artwork is beautiful, if not a bit too digital for its own good. The problem that bothers me most about Reprisal Scars, they offer no novelty and initial excitement at this well crafted piece of melodic death metal soon wears off. Compared to their country mates Mors Principium Est, Reprisal Scars still have a lot of work cut out for them before they can even come within the proximity of their peers. While the 3 cuts on this EP are well written and more than decently performed; you've heard it all before, done better a good 10 years ago when Gothenburg death metal reigned supreme.
