After the demise of Centurian in April 2002, main composer and founding member Rob Oorthuis took some well-deserved time off and shortly after created Nox. The band - consisting of himself on guitars, Bob Dussel on drums and Severe Torture members Patrick Boleij on bass and Seth v/d Loo on vocals; the latter two being part of the first Centurian line-up – went to create the 3 track "Zazaz" promo and now this pulverizing 9 track debut, "Ixaxaar". Nox does not form a great deviation from the high standards in musicianship, skill and brutality Oorthuis set with Centurian. The delivery is breakneck to say the least, but due to the great production work every detail in the guitar - and drum work is displayed with great agility and finesse. The musicianship is simply outstanding, Oorthuis spews forth a torrent of thick, meaty death riffs, insane rhythms, skincrawling harmonies and intricate leads that are in the best tradition of his former band. Seth v/d Loo is equally convincing behind the mic, his vocals are more versatile and natural in comparison to Jerry Brouwer (ex-Centurian, Xi Zul) on the now classic "Liber ZarZax". Actually, at this point v/d Loo reminds me a bit of Hate Eternal's Erik Rutan. ‘Blind Mad God' contains a riff almost identical to Centurian's ‘Hell at Last'. Whether this is coincidental and or intentional, I'll leave in the middle. ‘Darkness Undying' reminds me a bit of early Severe Torture. Conceptually, the thematics of Chaos are heeded to and people who can't get enough of this sort of thing are surely to find their fill with this record. Clocking little over half an hour, this is just enough for a first full length offering. Highly recommended for fans of occult death metal as Krisiun, Hate Eternal, Vital Remains, Nile and Behemoth.
