With bands like Despised Icon, Darkest Hour and Beneath the Massacre the deathcore genre has branched off in various subgenres over the last years. Stuttgart, Germany five-piece Subterfuge Carver takes deathcore as foundation and adds a lethal dose of neo-thrash (newer Sepultura, Ektomorf, God Forbid) to the proceedings. "Deathcore Beta" contains three tracks that contain the best of both worlds. Subterfuge Carver thrash, groove and mosh to no end and while the tracks are more than solidly executed, they aren't really exceptional or standing out in one way or the other. The band is apt at their instruments and the tracks are decently written but lack the hooks to really instantly become memorable, as far as energy and brutality is concerned Subterfuge Carver has understood their genre well enough. Although the band is mature given the short time they've been around Subterfuge Carver still misses the ability write material that is on the same level as classic Sepultura ("Chaos AD") or early Machine Head ("Burn My Eyes", "The More Things Change") – if the band can compensate their pummeling brutality with catchy, memorable songwriting and add a hook or two to signature tracks, they'll be well on their way of rising out of the underground. Vocally, the band is of the Killswitch Engage school that mixes gruff growls with clean sung sections which adds some great diversity to the proceedings. As it stands now, the band is a worthy addition to the scene but lacks somewhat of an identity to truly stand out from the competition. "Deathcore Beta" is just what its title implies; a brief exercise in highly lethal brutality with just enough street cred to address both the thrash - as death metal audiences.
