Combining atmospheric keyboard lines and moody piano tapestries with technical, heavily progressive staccato thrash riffing and operatic soprano vocals and crooning, To-Mera is really something else in a scene stagnant and dominated by imitators and pretenders to the throne. Unlike most atmospheric progressive metal bands To-Mera is surprisingly hard-hitting and more full-on metal than most of its contemporaries. The riffs are catchy, thunderous and flow violently while the synthesizer lines form a warm backdrop on which the rest of the band’s hooks in its parts. Regularly To-Mera breaks into avant-garde, free-flowing jazz interludes, just listen to ‘Born Of Ashes’ or ‘Dreadful Angel’ for proof of this great trait. The band has a knack for writing compact, emotive songs that breathe both heaviness and somberness in equal measure. Add to that a great production (done in Veszprem, Hungary and London, England) that gives each instrument space to breathe and a great packaging – this makes the equation pretty clear: To-Mera is no one-hit wonder and will only show its potency in years to come. Fans of bands as Communic, Into Eternity, Nevermore, (to a lesser degree) Epica and Evergrey will have no problem getting into this great debut effort.
