Alongside their peers Fear Factory, Brazilian thrash metal titans Sepultura also see a best-of released by their former contractor Roadrunner Records. Roadrunner has decided to compile the most popular tracks off the band’s classic, Cavalera brother era, namely 1985-1996. One track is featured from Sepultura’s more (early) death metal inspired 1985 debut “Morbid Visions/Bestial Devastation”. From there on we immediately jump to the title track and roll-out single ‘Inner Self’ of 1989’s breakthrough album “Beneath the Remains”. Why the label decided to ignore 1987’s “Schizophrenia” is anyone’s guess. Moving on, there are three tracks of 1991’s classic death/thrash crossover opus “Arise”, of which two were singles back in the day. 1993’s legendary “Chaos AD” marked the band’s head-on direction into a more thrash/hardcore direction and 1996’s tribal thrash gem “Roots”. Both getting a similar treatment as “Arise” in song choice and amount of tracks presented. Roadrunner Records has decided to ignore the band’s last two records for the label without singer/frontman Max Cavalera which leaves somewhat of a bitter aftertaste. The artwork is basic but quite typical (and fairly unspectacular) for the series. Again, if you are new to Sepultura’s older material, this is an ideal place to start from. Long time fans, however, will find absolutely nothing of interest here.
