For a band hailing from Portugal, Requiem Laus sound distinctively Scandinavian. Like Finland's Amorphis (without the synths and folk sections) and Sweden's In Flames (at an earlier stage in their career) before them, Requiem Laus manage to add a certain epic feel to their melodic slightly doom-laden death metal. The chugging riffs and melodies are solid in execution and composition but fairly unexceptional as a whole. In a track as 'Final Function' the interplay between vocals and riffs are reminiscent of Finland's Shape Of Despair. The Eastern sounding melodies of 'Perfect World' on the other hand remind a bit of a doomy Melechesh. 'Maledictis' is short acoustic guitar track in the truest tradition of those early Swedish death metal records, certainly good to hear a thing like this again. 'Reflection Of God' is the rare fast track on this promo with the typical guitar harmonies that dominate the majority of this release. The production work on this promo is incredibly pristine with a clear, distinct guitar sound that still holds enough punch. Drums and bass both sit solid in the mix without drowning out each other at any given point. Requiem Laus are definitely a band with the chops and technical know-how to truly become a competitor, but at this point the material written lacks individuality and a certain charisma to put them above the grey masses. The material is above average but not memorable, and therefore does not justify frequent revisiting at this point.
