Italy’s death dealers Mutilated Soul are – despite their gore/grind sounding moniker - heavily inspired by classic old school US death metal of “The Infernal Storm” era Incantation and “Dawn Of Possession” era Immolation. While their stab at the genre isn’t exactly soiled with innovation, it is very solid in composition, dynamics and memorable riffing. The riffs are pure John McEntee worship and vocalist Daniele Pruner could easily be mistaken for vintage Incantation growlers Craig Pillard or Daniel Corchado. ‘Decomposition Of the Soul’ has a few eerie shredding leads and fittingly brooding doom fused bass lines. This EP counts only 6 cuts, but the majority of the material is surprisingly convincing. The artwork is very pro looking and reminds me somewhat of Cryptopsy’s “Once Was Not”. Despite a few minor failures; most notably some occasional sloppy playing, weak riffs and one-track minded songwriting Mutilated Soul sound quite mature given their short existence. If the band manages to trim out some of the sloppy performances, tighten up their composition skills and add their own touch to the style they’re currently pursuing – they might just become one of Italy’s more promising death metal exports to date.
