Pestifer comes to us from Belgium and claims to play technical death/thrash in the vein of later Death, Atheist, Pestilence and the likes. With that description they aren't far off, although they need better production values and work some more on their songwriting. The basement bargain production makes me think of something as Suffocation's "Breeding the Spawn" or Deicide "Serpents Of the Light". This demo starts off with 'Wrested from Saturn' which despite its interesting start/stop structure and classic old school death/thrash riffs isn't really all that bad, but it isn't the grand opening a band could hope for. An honorable mention must however go out to the bassist of this combo, as his Steve DiGiorgio like bass lines are mixed prominently into the whole. The drumming isn't all that interesting and doesn't complement the above average riffs and occasional leads. The production on the drum isn't that great either, as it to be expected with a demo and reminds a bit of the first Aborted record. Vocally, Pestifer is inspired by the old school genre crop and the rasps and shrieks are often in the early Pestilence vein. As stated before, the basement bargain production isn't recommendable for technical death metal. The guitars should be more upfront in the mix, the drum a little less. It's good to see that bands are putting the bass back more upfront in their production. Artwork is respectable but nothing you haven't seen before. Overall, this is a halfway decent take at the technical genre. If Pestifer manage to take their songwriting to the next level, hone their skills a bit more and record their next outing in a professional recording studio, they might just become a band to watch out for.
