    Blood Mountain ()

On their Warner Music debut Mastodon further explore the direction taken on "Leviathan" and then some. The most accurate and appropriately fitting word to describe this album would be 'epic' - as everything on this conceptual epos just screams magnitude. Mastodon is on to the game that made them famous: prog rock infused stoner metal with dual vocals and masterful songwriting. The experimentation goes full tilt boogie on "Blood Mountain", as the electronics at work in 'Circle Of Cysquatch' or the vocal maelstrom in 'Bladecatcher' display. Mastodon do deliver some of their most mind boggling material to date. Brann Dailor delivers his signature crazy drumwork, while guitarists Brent Hinds and Bill Kelliher are their usual self with their ear catching combination of stoner, rock and thrash metal. Bassist Troy Sanders shares vocal duties with Kelliher and it is to be noted that both go for a more clean singing approach, as first found on "Leviathan". All around "Blood Mountain" is more polished (perhaps due to the band's inflated recording budget) and to a certain extent a bit more mainstream oriented than metal. The riffs are still wholly Mastodon and while they are less frontal or head-on than on their previous outings, it truly goes to show that this band cannot be pigeonholed to one genre. "Blood Mountain" features a couple of high profile guests, including Scott Kelly (Neurosis) on 'Crystal Skull', Josh Homme (Queens Of the Stone Age) on 'Colony Of Birchmen' and Cedric Bixler-Zavala (Mars Volta) on 'Siberian Divide'. Limited edition of "Blood Mountain" comes in a lush designed slipcase with an additional DVD, including a 'making-of', the video for 'Capillarian Crest' and a photo gallery. Mastodon has delivered an album that has enough mainstream appeal for the MTV crowd while retaining enough metallic edge to make longtime devotees happy. Truly a sensational record.
