After the first 5000 units of this single got sold exclusively through US chain store Hot Topic it's up to the rest of the world to get a taste of madness. There's one new track, 'Cult', a live rendition of the classic 'War Ensemble', a jam session of said new track without the lyrics. 'Cult' in itself is vintage Slayer, with an incredibly crunchy chorus and two shredding noisy solos as we're used from these guys. The new track could be described as a modern interpretation of 'Dittohead'. It should however be noted that Araya's voice – although he remains as expressive and venomous in delivery as ever - isn't what it used to be some years ago, the endless touring has taken its toll and the results can be heard here. Legendary drummer Dave Lombardo is in fine form and it feels like he never left. Germany's Nuclear Blast Records has also released a 7 inch picture disc of this very same release, limited to 600 copies and sold out already. I can't say I'm really floored by this EP, but Slayer remains one of the long-standing monuments of the heyday of the '80s thrash metal movement, which spawned institutions like Megadeth, Metallica and Metal Church. Their perseverance with their time-worn genre is awe-inspiring and their endless determination to not give in to past and current trends commands incredible amounts of respect from friend and foe alike.
