Shiver Records sublabel RottenToTheCore ventures into the tricky territory of split albums with this first effort, aptly titled “Outcast vs Moker”. Both bands situate themselves within the deathcore genre and both play a very similar style. If it weren’t for the names mentioned on the cover, I’d take it that this was one and the same outfit. The first three tracks are done by Outcast who plays this genre surprisingly well. Harsh mosh riffs, mean vocal delivery, to-the-point drumming and enough breakdowns to keep the crowds happy. It sounds very familiar as far as vocal work and song structures goes, but it works well enough given the short time this band has been around. Moker, on the other hand, aren’t quite on the same compositional and technical level as their companions of Outcast. These latter three tracks feel forced, lifeless and unnatural in comparison to the three tracks opening this split effort. Moker definitely needs to go back to the drawing board as to why they chose to pursue this specific genre. Albeit from the great clean opening riff to ‘Rip the Flesh’ there isn’t a single thing that is able to capture nor hold my interest through out their three cuts. From the two bands partaking on this split record, Outcast comes highly recommended. The artwork is great, although it reminds more of something in the gore/grind genre than the deathcore we are presented with here. Both bands are mentioned at the right-hand corner in a font that isn’t quite eye-catching. Why they didn’t use both bands’ own logos is beyond me, it would have been more visually stimulating and simultaneously shown a shred of identity for both bands featured here. The lower right corner then mentions also that it’s a split cd we have here, for those one or two people who might have been oblivious to that fact. Overall, RottenToTheCore have released an admirable split effort that despite a few minor flaws actually holds some promise and enough international appeal.
