Autopsy was the seminal gore death/doom metal act around drummer/vocalist Chris Reifert - whose track record includes drumming on "Scream Bloody Gore" the debut of formative death metal act Death - which released a string of albums in the first half of the nineties before disbanding. The band's original contractor, Peaceville, has now compiled a number of live shows, a rehearsal, some tour footage and released it as the "Dark Crusades" double DVD. The first disc contains a rehearsal from the 1988 "Critical Mass" demo days, with bassist Ken Sorvari's kids running around as the band works their way through the set. Second part of this disc contains an entire live set in Hong Kong Café, Los Angeles in 1993. The second DVD houses another two live sets and a number of extras, including a rare cover of Terrorizer's 'Corporate Pull-In' with Pestilence and goofy backstage footage from the band's various tours over the years. A neat warning sticker informs the viewer that these are old, handheld, shaky single-camera recordings that haven't been additionally remastered or cleaned up from source tapes in any way. It's exactly that certain unpolishedness which makes this DVD so remarkable. Considering that most of these tapes used for the DVD have been sitting on a shelve for over a decade and still look and sound as good as they do is a statement in itself. Autopsy was raw, incredibly oppressive and broodingly dark death metal - "Dark Crusades" perfectly embodies everything that made up this influential entity musically. It might be a bit tame or even archaic in comparison to today's big-budget extreme metal DVD productions and standards, but it is a lasting testimony to a band whose legacy will continue to live on in many years to come. Absolutely recommended for those that long for that forgotten classic death metal vibe of old.
