This is the second record of Sweden's critically acclaimed Spawn Of Possession and their first on promising young Dutch label Neurotic Records. Where their Unique Leader debut "Cabinet" still sounded a bit lifeless on the level of composition, this record sees the band coming into their own delivering 9 tracks (plus an atmospheric intro) of absolutely stunning technical death metal. 'Inception' starts off with a classic synthesizer piece which could have come off an Aurora Borealis record. The following tracks display Spawn Of Possession as a band that have little in the way of competition. High speed sections intertwine with moody mid-tempo sections as a torrent of jaw-dropping complex riffs and shredding leads form a constant attack on the senses. Where "Cabinet" still was a bit scattered on ideas here the nine tracks fit with each other perfectly and as a result the record flows quite naturally. Guitar-tandem Jonas Karlsson and Jonas Bryssling seem to have taken a progressive page or two from country mates Theory In Practice and US genre gods Cynic. As far as intensity is concerned the touring with Cannibal Corpse, Hypocrisy and Severed Savior has positively rubbed off on them, which is demonstrated in the intensively varied drumming of Dennis Röndum. At first "Noctambulant" might come off as a bit restrained in comparison to the debut. As soon as the material has sunk in, this record proves to have a higher replay value than their already classic debut. The digital artwork by Par Olofsson (Deeds Of Flesh, Psycroptic) is quite detailed and very easy on the eyes. Neurotic Records continues to deliver high quality material in the technical death metal genre and Spawn Of Possession don't fail to deliver in that genre. People who liked the band's seminal debut "Cabinet" can blindly purchase "Noctambulant" and enjoy the band more mature and progressive direction. Very highly recommended.
