Burial Within are coming to us from Memphis, Tennessee and they sound somewhat alike to early Immolation and Skinless with regular modern staccato and thrash metal riffing thrown in for good measure. The 5 tracks which make up this self-titled record are about the blandest death metal I have heard in a long time. Burial Within definitely has a few ideas of their own. Rooted in early '90s death metal Burial Within see the importance of logical song structure and leads in the guitar department. 'Fear As a Weapon' is the track that demonstrates this all best. My biggest gripe with this release is how scattered the ideas are, the band mixes '90s death metal with thrash influences alike to Pantera or early Machine Head – but nothing is ever linear enough to truly make sense of the material as a whole. The production values aren't the best either, they're reasonably acceptable – but it will be too messy and rough for those used to today's pristine productions. Artwork by Scott Norton is amazing, however. If Burial Within are aiming to become the next Mastodon or Dillinger Escape Plan, they'll have their work cut of for them. I can't say I'm really blown out of the water by this promo EP, but they deserve the benefit of the doubt.
