Now that Relapse alumni Mastodon have signed with Warner Bros one can't blame the label for riding the waves of those recent developments. In a daring move, Relapse released two Mastodon products virtually back to back. First there was the "Call Of the Mastodon" album, which compiled all of the band's earliest recorded outputs repolished and repackaged. Now here's the first Mastodon DVD, "The Workhorse Chronicles". It is indeed loaded with interesting material. No less than 28 live tracks in 2 hours (pretty much everything the band has written over the years, except for ‘Elephant Man' and ‘Joseph Merrick'), a 45 minute in-depth documentary and 3 video clips. The live part isn't as lush as people are used to these days, since it's only filmed with one camera. This might be boring to some, as these days even metal DVDs are being filmed with 7 to 11 cameras. Not only that, but the quality ranges from ready-for-broadcast to handicam bootleg and about everything in between. The interview part documents the band's humble beginnings and reveals quite a lot. One of their first sentences is "We still live in the same basement", the topic of previous bands is brought to the table, and the typical frustrations in "trying to make it big". Concluding, this might indeed be the most complete historical retrospective on Mastodon yet.
