Massive Assault is the Dutch answer to the current crop of old school death metal groups popping out of the woodwork on virtually every continent. With a sound similar to influential Swedish acts as Nihilist, (early) Dismember, Unleashed, Grave and Carnage this band is not going to win people over with their originality. Massive Assault does however manage to live up to its moniker by providing 4 cuts of stomping, demented old school Swedish death metal. Surprisingly convincing 'Plead not Guilty', 'The Rival Believer', 'Mr. Death' and 'You Failed' hearken back to the glory days of the genre. Rugged riffs that are hell-bent on destruction merge with neck-breaking grooves, rocking guitar solos and a stark contrast of mid-tempo and pulverizing faster sections. "Conflict EP" is recorded in guitarist Fredda's home-studio and the result is pretty impressive considering. This is not the usual underproduced, muffled affair and its production reminds me of the stuff that usually originates from the Harrow Studios, Losser. Vocalist Jos shouts his grunts pretty similar to Altar's Edwin Kelder, sole guitarist Fredda is able to mimic the classic Swedish guitar tone (Entombed's "Clandestine" comes to mind) drummer Gideon and bassist Jerome fill up the remaining gaps adequately but don't really stand out in one way or another. If old school Swedish death metal is your thing, Massive Assault should provide your much needed fix. Not terribly original, but the execution and production make up for it.
