Belgian old school death metal seems to be on the way up. Coalition's 2003 effort "Devil Revolution" was reasonably good given the underground nature of the band. "Tortured By Eternal Dream" sees the band more convincingly at their game. Influences of modern day Kataklysm, classic Bolt Thrower and early Callenish Circle can be spotted through out their body of work. Most of the tracks feel too familiar to be truly remarkable and even outstay their welcome in crucial parts. On the other hand, certain parts are impressive - but they are too few on the whole of the album. 'Individual Spirit' starts off with a drum/riff pattern daringly similar to Six Feet Under's classic 'Lycanthropy' track. Preceding track 'Kingdom Of Madness' also houses a riff that feels lifted from the Pantera track 'Domination'. Coalition pull off fairly decent material, if not being it from a terribly sub-standard or predictable level. There are no real stand-out tracks and even less potential classics here. My primary problem with this record is its length, 11 tracks and a highly redundant intro - the result is that this album drags in its final third. All tracks contain workable ideas but Coalition will be better off combining multiple ideas in one track, instead of using a separate track for each idea. This will result in a more cohesive whole on the longer term. The production is okay given the budgetary constraints, neither are all the tracks equally memorable in the songwriting department. Overall, Coalition need to streamline their ideas and get rid of the useless filler tracks: fewer tracks, higher quality. On the whole, this isn't a bad effort per se. This band still has a lot of work cut out for them if they're willing to compete in the international scene.
