French technical death metal act Gojira has been steadily on the rise in the last half decade. After "Terra Incognita" and especially with the release of "The Link" the band broke new grounds and rightfully scored a deal with French quality label Listenable Records. Their breakthrough effort "The Link" got (unnecessarily, I might add) re-mastered and re-issued - while the original is still widely available and easy to obtain, get that one instead of the re-issue - by their new contractor. Now its successor "From Mars to Sirius" is here. From the opening notes it's clear that Gojira have improved in both songwriting and delivery. 'Ocean Planet' is a rock solid, cement tight exercise in modern death metal combining the monolithic songwriting prowess of "Covenant" era Morbid Angel with the mechanical grooves of later day Meshuggah. On "From Mars to Sirius" the band's world music influences surface less than before, but remain present in their sound. Lyrically, Gojira mix socio-political commentary with a Neurosis-like interest in environmental matters, such as pollution and global warming and some more psychedelic topics ('Flying Whales'). Production is thick but crystal clear with a dense guitar - and drum sound. Gojira aren't here to break any speed limits obviously, but their craftsmanship as songwriters only benefits from this aspect. As last time around all the tracks contain multiple layers and always reveal new things upon repeated listens. This is Gojira's major selling point. Multi-layered technically structured songs that hold their catchiness and groove but always remain very accessible after several listening sessions. If you're looking for a record that's both accessible as well as musically challenging, be sure to give Gojira a listen. Highly recommended.
