With the much publicized release of the seminal "Goremageddon" Aborted has steadily grown in popularity and name recognition, especially in the US. By embracing the grinding extremity of US death metal, the keen melodic sense of its Swedish counterpart, while retaining their own groove the band has risen significantly in profile. Prior to this album the band released the "Haematobic" EP which already gave an indication as to what direction "The Archaic Abattoir" would be. Frankly, while Aborted is still miles ahead of the competition this record doesn't offer up a great deal of novelties compared to its predecessor. Comparing "Goremageddon" to "Engineering the Dead" was nigh on impossible as both were generally different and played in a radically different league. "The Archaic Abattoir" however doesn't really pale in comparison to its predecessor. Aborted have taken a few steps back, speed-wise, allowing the tracks to breathe and flow more freely - but other than that, not much has changed. 'Dead Wreckoning' - the roll out single of this album - sets the benchmark to which the rest of the album can be measured. All tracks are of equal quality and display proficient musicianship, a solid songwriting muscle and adequate technical prowess. Lyrically, the album continues with the concept and theme set by "Goremageddon". I wouldn't go as far as to call it a concept album, but there's definitely a central narrative that ties these tracks nicely together. This is also the last album to feature guitarist Bart Vergaert (ex-Suhrim, Fatal Obsession) and debut effort for drummer Gilles Delacroix (Gronibard). Stand-out tracks: 'Dead Wreckoning', 'Threading On Vermillion Deception', 'The Gangrenous Epitaph' and 'Hecatomb'. Not quite as groundbreaking as their previous outing, but another solid slab of intelligent death metal all the same.
