(Into the Pandemonium Of Celtic Frost)Formed from the ashes of black/death metal band Hellhammer in 1984, the Swiss based Celtic Frost were a pivotal influence on the death, black, speed, and dark metal genres, pioneering many of the musical styles and avant-garde elements that have since become synonymous with bands like Sepultura, Emperor, Dark Funeral and Enslaved. This book reads as a candid insight into the inner workings of Celtic Frost that will both appeal to newcomers as to long time fans of this legendary outfit. Tom first takes us back to his childhood and early teens living in Switzerland and discovering the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal. It then jumps far into the future with the chapter "The Making Of A Breakthrough Album", which in-depth documents the writing, arranging and recording of Celtic Frost's seminal "Into the Pandemonium" album. We then go back to the Hellhammer days ("Inception") to the "Morbid Tales" and "To Mega Therion" era ("The Manic Alright"). We see the band grow being one-time Kerrang Magazine darlings in their early days, while they still were establishing their visual identity. In later chapters the band struggles holding on to their fanbase as their albums grew more challenging and some people stopped supporting the unit. Later on the dark days of "Cold Lake" to the split and re-formation of Fischer's outfit ("The Involuntary Nomad" and "And A Perpetual Rover") are to be found. The book reads pleasantly and isn't written in too technical terms or difficult language. Its striking that Celtic Frost's earlier career is only described in a brief matter, while "Into the Pandemonium" is documented in a very detailed manner. The book comes with lush pictures exclusive to this release and should be appealing to anyone even remotely interesting in the history of this legendary outfit.
