In just a few short years Unique Leader has become the pillar of the international underground death metal community. Their roster, consisting of the most relentless death metal acts on the scene today, speaks in volumes of just that. Odious Mortem follows suit within the framework of this roster. With only one demo ("Gestation Of Worms", which I never heard) prior to this record it's hard to analyze the band's evolution over the years. Fans of both Severed Savior and Incantation will find something of their taste here as Odious Mortem combines the technical prowess and songwriting savagery of the first, with the grinding mid-tempo death/doom parts of the latter. Although most tracks clock little over two minutes, each cut is filled with constantly shifting riffs, incredibly fast yet varied drumming and in true American fashion, the very deep guttural grunts. And this is my one gripe with this record, while all tracks are of equal quality on the level of musicianship, technicality and brutality they all become the same after a while. Perhaps with lengthier compositions (that can house multiple ideas that now are scattered all over the tracklist), some additional guitar solos Odious Mortem can become a fair competitor for Swedish technical death metal formation Spawn Of Possession. Produced by Matt Sotelo (Decrepit Birth) the album is blessed with a clear production that retains enough old school rawness to link them to Incantation. Artwork by John Zig is once again something magnificent. Not quite the most original technical death metal band on the scene today, but with some additional fine-tuning Odious Mortem should be able to produce some memorable material in a not too distant future.
