    I Monarch (cd)

Their debut "Conquering the Throne" rightfully placed the band on the upper echelons of the genre. Back then being backed up by Jared Anderson, Doug Cerrito (Suffocation) and Tim Yeung (Aurora Borealis, Council Of the Fallen). After a few tours and line-up changes Hate Eternal returned with "King Of All Kings". My biggest gripe with that record was that it was too extreme. Too fast, too technical and the songs didn't stick with me two seconds after they faded out. Now the band is back with their all-important third offering "I, Monarch". Opening this record is 'Two Demons' a track that is more mid tempo and groovy than anything the band has done prior to this. While the trademark blast-sections are kept intact, they apparently now have found a way to integrate them into more memorable songwriting. 'Behold Judas' - the video track for this record - proves just that. New bassist Randy Piro is a good substitute for the departed Jared Anderson. Drummer Derek Roddy (Malevolent Creation, Nile, Council Of the Fallen) is still all over the place and all over his kit, but somehow he doesn't go overboard the way "King Of All Kings" did. His drumming is now more based on groove and atmosphere than on being the fastest in existence. The production of this album sounds more organic than the cold mechanical sound of the debut or the ear-splitting sharpness of its successor. The didgeridoo on 'To Known Our Enemies' is the most original thing I have heard in death metal in a long time. Rutan's magnificent solo's are also to be found on this record and those alone justify the purchase of this record. With "I, Monarch" Hate Eternal are ready to claim their crown in the death metal field that only the rejuvenated Morbid Angel might be able to top.
