On their Earache debut Norwegian death metal outfit Blood Red Throne present no novelties compared to their 3 earlier outputs (all on Karmageddon Media). Instead, the band further hones their well-known style of old school Florida death metal, genre "From Beyond" era Massacre with a chronic attention deficiency disorder. The 12 cuts on this record all show a well produced, tightly executed slab of bloodsoaked death metal the way it was meant to be. With a new skinsman to their fold the drumming has become more interesting in comparison to the earlier releases, in which it was just functional in terms of the tracks. Mainman Tchort (who also has contributed in Emperor, Satyricon, Einherjer, Carpathian Forest and Green Carnation) once again churns out the malicious fleshripping riffs we have come to expect from him over the years. While the riffs are reasonably uncomplicated, they work exceptionally well in the framework of the songs at hand. In terms of production "Altered Genesis" is an improvement over the last two records (which had a great production already), the guitars are crushingly heavy, yet crisp. The drumsound is thick but natural and the bass lines are audible here. Which is often an exception in the death metal genre this day and age. Bassists - as said often buried in the mix of most records - are dealt a cruel hand in most combos of this kind. In Blood Red Throne the lad in question presents some interesting bass lines, which even show some progressive tendencies every once in a while. Is "Altered Genesis" groundbreaking in the said style? No, it isn't. Is it a decent record in the said style? Wholeheartedly, yes it is. On their fourth album to date, Blood Red Throne have once again injected new life into (old school) Florida death metal and gave it a modern relevance. Highly recommended.
