Suhrim's latest album caught me totally off-guard. While their previous outings were trainwrecks, plagued by haphazardness, sloppy execution, subpar production values, spelling mistakes and abysmal lay-outs - "The Cunt Collector" is rectifying most of the former mishaps. On their second full length Suhrim has grown confident in their own skills and has delivered one of the more convincing (old school) brutal death metal albums. Once again recorded at the Cavern Studios, Belgium "The Cunt Collector" comes with solid production values (Necrophobic's "The Nocturnal Silence" come to mind). First thing to notice is that this album is more tight and together in both songwriting and execution. 'Crushed Smashed Mangled' introduces a rather vicious brutal brand of death metal with a ripping old school thrash undertone. 'Fist Fucked In the Throat' starts off with Autopsy-like stoner/death riff, while the track itself reminds a lot of early Six Feet Under ("Haunted" era) groovewise. Additionally some minor Swedish guitarwork can be noticed. Did I mention this album has guitar - and bass leads? The title track and 'Sacrilege Christianity' both are graced with bass leads. 'Sacrilege Christianity' and 'Your Rotting Lips' have that old Cannibal Corpse drive, pounding death metal based on a thrash metal structure. 'Your Rotting Lips' even reminded me of Unleashed. The last two tracks of the album, namely 'C4 - the Nitro Chewing Gum' and 'Bubba' feature said guitar leads. I couldn't help but think of early Metallica ("Ride the Lightning", "Master Of Puppets") when I heard the solo in the last track. Perhaps new guitarist Jeroen Vingerhoed has anything to do with this. "The Cunt Collector" is definitely Suhrim's most consistent album to date. Tight, certainly, but this album won't make waves the same way that country mates Aborted did. All good comments aside, there are a few problems with this album as well. First off, I can't begin to describe how horrible the artwork truly is. For a conceptual drawing it passes, for a finished artwork: it doesn't. The printing quality of the lay-out isn't all that great either. Concluding, the tracklist does contain a spelling mistake or two, which simply doesn't look professional. I suggest Suhrim to hire a professional recording studio next time around, have a respected genre artist do the artwork and further tighten up their skills. Highly recommended for fans of Autopsy, Abscess, Bloodbath, Chaosbreed and the likes. Keep your eyes on Suhrim, they might surprise us in the nearby future.
