Australia's Pod People claim to play "doomy groovy rock", which isn't too far from the truth. Black Sabbath laced riffage is fused with a Kyuss inspired bottom end groove and a truckload of crushing doom metal. Imagine "Wolverine Blues" era Entombed but far slower and inject lots of groove. 'The Missed' is the first track that truly shows Pod People's stoner rock influence. 'Roadblock' shows the many faces of the band. With its many vocals: ranging from clean vocals, plain filthy rock vocals to excruciating grunts and sluggish tempo this is where the band shows its amazing capabilities. On a more lighthearted note 'Hoovin'' sets in - which almost reminds me of Belgian blues/stoner rock combo Triggerfinger. Quite a contrast to the former track, but one great track when you're driving across town. 'Subterreanean' and 'Non-Prophet' are definite doom tracks in tradition of Esoteric, Skepticism and Worship. Albeit the latter one is more centered towards the stoner part of things. Both however are crushingly heavy, torturously slow and black as pitch. True highlights on this very solid album. Competently crossing genres Pod People always return to their basis, being harsh doom - while the stoner rock influence is definitely a plus here. The artwork is something special to say the least, as it is a rendering by Alchemist guitarist Roy Torkington, of the Inferno from Dante's "Divine Comedy" printed with multiple foldouts in the form of an inverted cross. To Blood Duster devotees I might point out that Josh Nixon plays guitar in this band. Pod People serve up an amazing mix of underground metal genres that will appeal to fans of Black Sabbath, Blind Dog, Isis, (later) Entombed, Khanate, Winter, Evoken to Candlemass and (early) Cathedral. If there's one album to named a classic to-be in the doom metal genre, "Doom Saloon" is a fair contender to the throne. Highly recommended.
