On their second outing Panchrysia opt for a more varied whole, clearly inspired by "Rebel Extravaganza" and "Vulcano" era Satyricon. First thing to notice is that the production is colder and rawer than on their debut. Vocalist Zahrim has improved a lot and is starting to establish his own style, obviously more confident than on "In Obscure Depths". Drummer Dol seems to have found his place as well, no longer relying on the constant blasting. 'Angst' forms an excellent example of this. The opening riff to 'Brave Black World' should make the Satyricon influence quite apparent. 'Cold Comfort' has a great mid tempo centerpiece, where it becomes painfully clear that the cymbals sound horrible this time around. 'Infection 1349' is another strong mid tempo epic. 'Dark Ages' concluding minute Panchrysia presents a stunningly progressive edge previously unheard. 'Revolt Culture' is another mid tempo track that seems to use left-over riffs from "In Obscure Depths" tracks 'the Winter Chill' and 'Creation Of A Mortal Spirit'. Somewhat a disappointment. 'Ethical Vortex' takes up pace again and made me think of "Shadowthrone" era Satyricon without its Norse instrumentation. 'Checkpoint Zero' deserves a special mention here, as it is a 14 minute cut of almost epic proportions that includes an industrial/ambient soundscape. The lay-out indicates a strong affiliation with the current Moonfog roster. Moreover, it has so much in common with Satyricon's "Rebel Extravaganza" that is borders on plagiarism. The music however is solid as a brick and executed into perfection - Panchrysia seems to be searching for their own niche in the modern black metal genre. Aside from these minor flaws, this album will certainly have more people take notice of this band. I feel that Panchrysia will come into their own with the successor to this album. For now, however, they are one of the better Satyricon clones out there. I suggest Panchrysia to further carve your own path instead of standing in the shadow of a band's whose reputation they can't possibly match at this point in their career.
