    Serenity In Fire (cd)

Much however has changed and Kataklysm are no exception. Once revered for their mystical progressive technical death metal - backed up by conceptually fascinating trilogies of lyrically timeless horror fiction based around Lovecraftian themes - the band saw various key members leaving and steadfastly progressed to a more mainstream sound. "Serenity In Fire" the follow-up to 2002's sees no departure from the formula of Kataklysm's last few outings. The artwork looks like a concoction of last three Pantera records, namely: skulls, snakes and fire. Kicking off with a sample of "Road to Perdition" the band instantly plays it's cards with 'The Ambassador Of Pain' which is a simple riff/mosh structured track, pretty much in par with the title track of the said 2002 recording. 'The Resurrected' opts for a similar course, having a short clean vocal part somewhere near the chorus. To say that this sounds abysmal would be an understatement. As before, the band doesn't hide their interest in war-based themes, although the lyrics are getting more asinine and derisory with each consecutive album, for reference try 'As I Slither'. A factor that has remained intact through out all the cosmetic changes Kataklysm has gone through over the years they still use their characteristic blast parts. I was going to comment positively on that aspect, were it not that long time producer and guitarist Jean-François Dagenais has decided to trigger new skinsman Martin Maurais' kit halfway into oblivion. While Maurais undeniably is a skilled lad providing those jaw dropping fast blast, they border on sounding like a drum computer, which is never a compliment. While I have nothing against drummers triggering their kit, this shouldn't be taken too far. All bad comments aside, if you like your death metal br00thal and without any complementary substance - you need this album. Looking for a influential classic? Then I suggest you try out their seminal debut "Sorcery" and its follow-ups "Mystical Gate Of Reincarnation" and "Temple Of Knowledge".
