With two albums under its belt, it pains me that I'm not familiar with Veiled Allusions previous body of work. This project, raised by Penitent mainman Karsten Hamre, concentrates on providing its listener with minimal droning ambient soundscapes. Atmospheric in nature Veiled Allusions pretty much is comparable to early Mortiis minus the troll imagery or Equimanthorn minus the rich instrumentation and Oriental influences. Actually, this album would be an ideal soundtrack to recent indie micro-budget outputs such as "Ice From the Sun" or "the Mutilation Man". Oppressively confronting, mind-expanding music that touches one's primal feelings. While not scoring high up the variation chart Veiled Allusions does get its message across surprisingly effective, the ten minute epic 'Through the Corridors Of Time' even reminds a bit of the orchestral backbone of later Neurosis or the ambient parts of Until Death Overtakes Me. It is with this track that the album truly takes off. 'At the Break Of Dawn' doesn't lighten up in contrary to what the title of the track might suggest. Slightly more wave, this track feels like walking on a deserted road in pouring rain with dark clouds overhead. 'Unfolding the Universe' is much more dreamier track with a minimal pulsing rhythm through out as hollow sounds echo lifeless through out the cold confines of space. The rest of the album pretty much follows in these footsteps. If you are into experimental, ambient/darkwave, I suggest you give Veiled Allusions a listen.
