What is there to say about the new Nasum album? Over the course of three albums prior to this one these Swedish grind merchants have proven to be innovators of the genre. "Inhale/Exhale" and "Human 2.0" both presented razorsharp modern political grind, whereas "Helvete" included some more mid tempo rockier parts. With "Shift" Nasum combines these two facets in what are the band's most competent and compact tracks to date. Once the alarm sounds of 'Particles' kick in, Nasum come down as brutal as they have ever been, cunningly obliterating anything that happens to be in their path. 'Engine Of Death' slows down towards the end with a miniature lead. 'Wrath' starts off with an early Entombed-ish death metal riff and manages to retain a similar groove through out. 'The Deepest Hole' starts off with a rather melodic riff that forms the recurring theme through out the mid tempo parts alternating the blastbeats. 'High On Hate' showcases Nasum's hardcore side a bit more and is interesting for just that reason alone. 'Circle Of Defeat' is a moshpit inducing grind track, where the band's characterizing blasting is intertwined with groovy riff structures and even some scream-along parts. 'Fury' even has some particular Swedish guitar harmonies. "Shift" is once again blessed with a stellar production, courtesy of vocalist/guitarist Mieszko A. Talarczyk that ensures every conceivable detail is clearly heard. As with any Nasum album there a few Swedish tracks as well to be found here. 24 tracks of top notch political grind, both on the level of production as on composition. Nasum will continue delivering quality products like this that push the envelope of the genre. Recommended highly to genre fanatics and well-versed metalheads in general.
