Warfield

wywiad przeprowadził - Wouter Roemers
Comprised of three members of the veteran Mexican death metal acts Disgorge, Rapture and Raped God 666 this trio isn't lacking in experience. Warfield recently debuted on Calamity Productions with the excellent "Conquering the Black Horde". A violent and bestial piece of traditional black metal that recalls the earlier releases in the genre. Concluding their record with a fiery rendition of Sepultura's early classic 'Troops Of Doom', Masterful Magazine arranged a chat with Warfield vocalist/guitarist Polo "Hellfire" Flores about their death metal past, their two label deal and the Mexican scene in general.
Hi! Thanks for doing this interview with us! What are you and the rest of Warfield currently up to now that your debut is out?

Hey! How are you, Wouter? I hope fine, so thanks for the time and interview to Warfield. We are from Mexico City, we are 4 member on the band this is the actual line up: Hellfire – guitar & vocal, Molosh – guitar, Infernal – Drums and Zeus on the bass, at the beginning at 2007 Hellfire and Infernal recording a demo in 2008 time before enter to the studio to record the first album of the band called "Conquering The Black Horde", at the moment Warfield its recording the "Holy Trinity" EP with 3 tracks.

Calamity Productions has recently released your "Conquering the Black Horde" album in their territory of the East. How are the reactions thus far? Are they anywhere near what you expected?

Calamity Productions is a really small label in Thailand, but we believe in Wan and he is working hard and really well. We are satisfied until moment with this, in truth we hope even more!

So, the most obvious question to start with. What were the reasons for forming Warfield, was this something you wanted to do for a long time, but couldn't due to commitments to other bands you were involved in?

I'm a true fan of the black metal scene, always in my mind after my exit of Raped God. Everything was clear and it gives to me compose everything what you know now like Warfield. And the other band were not a problem in the creation of Warfield.

The three of you are seasoned veterans of Mexico's death metal scene with bands like Disgorge, Rapture and Raped God 666. Were you all tired of the death metal scene and wanted to do something entirely different?

Absolutely we are no tired of the death metal and thrash, just we are a fans of the black metal and the past is gone. We share the same ideology and we felt that arrive the time to make honest and direct something and of course.

Prior to releasing "Conquering the Black Horde" you cut a demo in 2008 simply called "demo". Is that any different from the material that ended up on your full length album?

This demo contains 4 songs of which we included 2 into the " Conquering …" the main idea of each recording is that each recording has something exclusive.

Is there a main man in the band - someone who writes the lyrics, comes up with the main concept, arrangements and directs the ongoing of things, or is it all teamwork?

I, Hellfire, am the creator of Warfield. I do the guitar and lyrics work and all that to the band. But really without them I can't to do this real, they have much to do in the composition time.

On your most recent offering "Conquering the Black Horde" the production is well developed, organic and warm sounding. Not quite typical for the underground black metal genre. I assume that's to differentiate yourself from the crop of others bands who sound like they recorded it hastily in a garage with a 4 track?

I believe in the sound of the old school of black metal and I think is great that sound … but we don't want return at those moments, I believe that each age has its good things, in my personal interest I want to offer good music and good sound production.

"Conquering the Black Horde" was initially released by Mexican label Black Saw Records and was also recently picked up for wider release by Bangkok, Thailand-based Calamity Productions. How has working with these two labels worked out for Warfield?

The deal with these two labels was each label work with 1000 copies and each label have something exclusive in this case: Black Saw Records have an edition A5 in dvd box and Calamity Productions have a different artwork and one more song a cover from Sepultura 'Troop Of Doom' this edition is limited, and the cover and illustration is of Sickness666.

The cover of Sepultura's early classic 'Troops Of Doom' was a neat touch. Most black metal bands end up covering Bathory, Hellhammer, Sarcófago or Venom. Who's idea was it to cover a track from Sepultura's little known and underappreciated 1986 "Morbid Visions" debut?

Simply we chose that cover since it is a band that we like much in an age. We decided this tribute to one of the bands that put to the world of feet to head and in the personal I love the "Morbid Vision" album for me is the best of Sepultura.

You come from Mexico City, Mexico, besides death metal formations Cenotaph, The Chasm and Disgorge I'm not really familiar with any other bands from your region. How would you describe the extreme metal scene of your country and region?

In actuality Mexico have a real and hard underground to name bands some: Hacavitz, Black Torment, Xibalba, Avshia, Nodens, Sargatanas, Denial, Xiuhtecuhtly, Alpha Eridiano, Anarchus, Tlacaelel, Funeral Moon... and this scene is more big day by day, we have some big fests of national and international bands to name some: Black Fest, Mexican Brutality, Apocalipsys Open Air, Morbid fest, Monterrey Metal Fest, Brutal Fest.

What would you say are the primary challenges, trials and tribulations that extreme metal bands face in Mexico, in trying to get known and established beyond the country's borders?

Here in Mexico the support is really difficult to grow. Not exist a true commitment between label and bands and we don't have an great labels to. We must look for abroad to be able to be listened and to fight by a place in the worldwide scene.

Okay, that about sums it up. Feel free to end this interview in any way you like. If there's anything of importance we might have forgotten to mention or anything you'd like to add, just go ahead. Thanx a lot and all the best to all of you!
