  • Bog Oak - "A Treatise on Resurrection and the Afterlife" 2014 / EP
    SVART RECORDS
    USA

Bog Oak - A Treatise on Resurrection and the Afterlife Much like their Portland, Oregon contemporaries Witch Mountain, Bog Oak too plays a psychedelic variation of what High On Fire perfected on its first two-three albums. Draped in esoterica, philosophy and mysticism Bog Oak's biggest strength is frontwoman Julie Seymour. In bass-heaviness, guitar tone and drumming this EP is very reminiscent of "The Art of Self-Defense" and "Surrounded by Thieves". Seymour rasps her way through out most cuts, but she'll occasionally break out sensual chants as in 'The Resurrection of Animals' and 'Time Drift Of Seasons'. 'A Sea Without Shore' was released as a single prior to the EP. That exactly this EP is released on Finnish occult rock specialist label Svart Records should surprise no one with even a passing interest in this particular genre. Bog Oak is part Seremonia, part High Priest Of Saturn, and like most, heavily indebted to Black Sabbath and related proto-doom metal bands of the 1970s. Bog Oak combines the best of sludge metal and the occult rock movement and combines it with serpentine vocals. The interesting lyrics are a complimentary bonus. Much like deathcore 70s occult rock is often considered the scourge of the metal scene, and with good reason, Bog Oak are one of the few bands that do the genre justice, and knows what makes it tick. For that reason, and Seymour's vocals, is "A Treatise on Resurrection and the Afterlife" worthy of your undivided attention. Pick it up if you can find it.
