Skeletal Remains - Beyond the Flesh This death metal combo from California originally went under the Anthropophagy moniker and features a member of retro-thrash metal act Fueled by Fire. "Beyond the Flesh" is the band’s first official recording after a demo session a few years ago. The vocals are somewhere between Martin van Drunen (Asphyx, Hail Of Bullets) and the most vile exultations of Obituary’s John Tardy. The drumming is very tasteful, not too overindulgent and relatively simple, in the tradition of early icons Bill Andrews, Marco Foddis and Donald Tardy. "Beyond the Flesh" sounds like "Leprosy" era Death (or "From Beyond" era Massacre), "Consuming Impulse" era Pestilence combined with a dose of Possessed and a bit of early Malevolent Creation. In comparison to a lot of contemporary acts this sounds a lot more dark, menacing and grim, as it should be. The solo’ing is pretty amazing, as it recalls the classic work of Rick Rozz (Massacre, ex-Death, ex-Mantas). Today’s underground market is oversaturated with flat sounding clinical, faster-than-thou death metal that misses feeling and obscure atmosphere. Skeletal Remains have a different agenda and are much stronger for it. The production is absolutely fantastic with massive, powerful drums, prominent bass guitar and riffing that is both brickheavy and incredibly clear. In a lot of ways it is refreshing to hear traditional bass-heavy death metal done this well and with this much love and gusto. Skeletal Remains aren’t yet another clueless act riding the coattails of a trend (yes, retro-death is a fad at this point), they are the embodiment of youngsters expressing their genuine adoration for a genre they grew up on. Why aren’t there more bands like this?
