Azarath - Blasphemers’ Maledictions Azarath is a supergroup of sorts consisting of members from established institutions such as Anima Damnata, Behemoth, Damnation and Lost Soul. On their fifth full length there is little change to the band’s established formula. The membership’s collective technical prowess is expected and “Blasphemers’ Maledictions” does not falter on that end. In comparison to their earlier recordings the riffing is slightly more melodic and the creepy serpentine leads/solos greatly add to the atmosphere. The riffs and melodies are Swedish in tone, but thoroughly Polish in their bluntness and technical undercurrent. Comparisons with Belphegor are inevitable, although both bands are clearly conceptually different. As per usual Azarath show no mercy and obliterate all in their path by sheer force and intensity. Poland has always had a knack for delivering the most uncompromising of death metal, yet Azarath top expectations by being even more savage than usual. Star of the line-up is drummer Inferno who, while far more straightforward and less complex in comparison to his work in Behemoth, proves that he is probably the most accomplished drummer in Poland, only matched by Marcin Gołębiewski (Yattering) in sheer diversity, intensity and complexity. The artwork is radically more different compared to past outings, but much better for it. “Blasphemers’ Maledictions” isn’t exactly deviating from the past Azarath formula, yet it has clearly defined and honed their assault into a more compact, listenable and utterly merciless package. Where certain other long-running bands show signs of stagnation and creative decay, these Polish craftsmen only get better with age, showing no immediate signs of letting up or bowing out. Well done, gentlemen.
