Blut Aus Nord - 777 - Sect(s) With the release of the original 2001 version of "The Mystical Beast Of Rebellion" French enigmatic black metal act Blut Aus Nord commenced a musical transformation that is seldom seen anymore in the underground. With subsequent offerings such as "The Work That Transforms God" (2003), "MoRT" (2006) and their most recent 2007 record "Odinist: the Deconstruction Of Reason by Illumination" they prove to be the most vital band French has offered this particular genre. "777 - Sect(s)" is the first chapter in a proposed trilogy of conceptually linked albums. As with past records Blut Aus Nord here further explore the hypnotic nature of their music. The repetitive riffing, the barbaric drumming and the demonic wailing vocals are the meat and patatous of this record, while the dissonance, gloomy atmosphere and the occasional venture into ambient and light electronic segments adds to the feeling of ghoulish unearthliness. There is something about this band and their music that gets under one's skin. There are certainly black metal bands out there that are more evil, more primitive or plainly more brutal in a straightforward and mundane way, but there's only one Blut Aus Nord. Where many bands fail to create an atmosphere of gloom and doom, that very thing is where this band excels. Despite excellent musicianship and no shortage of ambitious ideas Blut Aus Nord never forget to let the songs take priority over everything else. It's mesmerisic, it's enigmatic and it's something that is heard far too less in these days where everybody can start a band and there are more labels and distributors than there will ever be reviewers and listeners to peruse and qualify all these releases. "777 – Sect(s)" brings the black metal genre back to its roots, as a genre meant to scare in its sheer density and ugliness.
