Dying Fetus - History Repeats… Usually when bands start to release covers or albums consisting entirely of re-recorded past material, it serves as a red herring to the fans. These releases tend to function as stopgap releases to mask signs of creative dryness, internal trouble or band-related politics (obligations to their label). Maryland death metal institution Dying Fetus has been consistingly releasing new material since their formation in 1992. "History Repeats…" is an EP consisting of covers from bands that formed an inspiration when they were starting out. There are six covers and one exclusive new track to be found here. Suprisingly, this EP consists mostly of classic US, UK and European death metal and no old school punk or hardcore whatsoever. The EP starts off with a cover of 'Fade Into Obscurity' by American death metallers Dehumanized (who famously released the critically acclaimed "Prophecies Foretold" in 1998 through Pathos Productions), the routinely expected 'Unchallenged Hate' by Napalm Death follows, next is a take on Broken Hope's 'Gorehog'. 'Rohypnol' is the earlier mentioned new track to make this release interesting to faithful fans. Bolt Thrower's 'Unleashed (Upon Mankind)' is the next song, after which the surprising 'Twisted Truth' from legendary Dutch act Pestilence follows. Concluding the EP is a rendition of early Cannibal Corpse staple 'Born In A Casket'. Considering Dying Fetus' demo releases (1993's "Bathe In Entrails" and 1994's "Infatuation with Malevolence") the covers by bands such as Bolt Thrower, Broken Hope and Napalm Death aren't very surprising and somewhat obligingly expected. The Pestilence cover is unexpectant is the sense that Dying Fetus was never a band to flaunt its technicality for the sake of it, something that latter-day Pestilence was guilty of. Dying Fetus covering their own contemporaries Dehumanized isn't too surprising since both bands had a hand in redefining (in a minor or major way) what New York death metal was supposed to represent. 'Rohypnol' (taking its name from the drug prescribed to chronic and severe insomniacs and is sometimes used a date-rape drug) is rather typical of latter day Dying Fetus and fits rather splendidly with their post-2000 direction. The handdrawn bandlogo of old seems to have been completely abandoned in favor of the characterless font that adorned the last few records. The digitally rendered medieval artwork (showing the skeletal remains of a slain warrior in full battle regalia) is rather unusual for a band priding itself in tackling socio-political and real-life problems of the individual and society as a whole. Far from mandatory this release appeal only to the most die-hard of Dying Fetus fans. The casual fan better waits until the next full lenght release drops to get his/her next NYDM fix.
