Enochian Crescent - "NEF.VI.LIM"
WOODCUT RECORDS/FIREBOX RECORDS
FINLAND
Enochian Crescent are one of Finland's most acclaimed and revered black metal acts. The band's early albums "Telocvovim" (1997), the "Babalon Patralx de Telocvovim" EP (1998) and "Omega Telocvovim" (2000) are held in high regard by many in the genre. Since completing the Omega trilogy in 2000, they are released material very sparsely. The only release prior to this one was 2006's "Black Church". As in the past this band is instantly recognizable as they merge traditional black metal with melodic death metal segments and the occassionaly foray into heavy metal. Retaining the authenticity of the early black metal recordings atmosphere prevails over technical skill in Enochian Crescent and the occasional sloppy playing adds to that. Combine this with the band's tendency to play at a crushing midpace and the resultant darkness is overpowering. The spirit of the Mayhem debut EP "Deathcrush" is clearly felt throughout the entirety of this record. Like many of the earlier bands in this genre Enochian Crescent need not to rely on constant blasting to point out how extreme they are. The dynamics and overall occult imagery take care of that expertly. The vocals are sick and depraved sounding, somewhat similar to Maniac's work on Mayhem's "Wolf's Lair Abyss" EP and MkM's work with Aosoth and Antaeus, but also include narrative passages, whispers, choirs and gurgles. The sufficiently heavy production is muddy and uneven but retains enough clarity for the guitars. The drums overpower the guitars which is not always commendable. The abstract artwork undoubtly tie in with the deep occult themes of this record, although it doesn't look that special. Enochian Crescent prove they are still the uncrowned leaders in this genre.
