Goreaphobia - Mortal Repulsion Philadelphia, Pennsylvania death metal act Goreaphobia have around in one form or the other since 1988, but due to constant line-up changes they never truly released anything. 2009 sees the release of their long overdue debut "Mortal Repulsion" through Ibex Moon Records, the label owned by John McEntee (Incantation, Funerus). Having members that went on to bands as Immolation, Incantation, Evoken, Absu, Blood Storm and Mortician this act can be called legendary and influential in the original sense of the word. Despite the 2007 release "Vile Beast Of Abomination" (which included both new, old, and classic live material) which was released through Necroharmonic Productions, Goreaphobia hasn't released anything despite their 20 year existence. "Mortal Repulsion" sounds a mix between Incantation, Deceased and Autopsy. The material here is mostly midpaced death metal with segments of pure doom. The vocals of Chris Gamble sound as a mix between Craig Pillard (ex-Incantation) and Chris Reifert (Autopsy, Abscess). The atmosphere is dark and brooding while the dirge tempos add to the oppressing feeling of horror. Like Asphyx, Autopsy and Incantation before them Goreaphobia is more about feeling and atmosphere than about instrumental prowess and complex songwriting. The horrific artwork by Wes Barlowe fits nicely with this deliberate old school undertaking. "Mortal Repulsion" delivers on its promise of pure death metal carnage and hopefully Goreaphobia will be able to follow up this impressive debut with another record in a few years from now. Ibex Moon Records have put another death metal monument in the spotlight, which they rightfully deserve.
