  • Cerebrum - "Spectral Extravagance"

    Lacerated Enemy Records
    Greece
Cerebrum - Spectral Extravagance Technical death metal like Death, Cynic, Atheist and (later) Pestilence from Athens, Greece. Session studio drums provided by the immensely gifted George Kollias (Nile, ex-Sickening Horror). As with the early Florida revolutionaries of this genre Cerebrum have crafted a variated collection of songs which are carefully structured and form a coherent whole. Central to the tracks are the riffs, which clearly come from the Chuck Schuldiner school of writing and playing. Modern in their approach, yet with a solid basis of the neo-classical melodies, techniques and scales which the venerable Death popularized later in their career. George Kollias is the star of this record, laying down a more open ended foundation of drums that fits seamlessly with this progressive genre offshoot. Be it blasting frenzy, jazzy percussion or more serene tempos Kollias excels in committing something to tape that works best for the songs at hand. Recorded at DB Recording Studios in Slovenia the production emphasizes clarity, definition and range over muddy thickness and plain visceral heaviness, which plagues most underground death metal. Mixed and mastered by George Bokos (Rotting Christ, ex-Sickening Horror) "Spectral Extravangance" is lush and can easily compete with anything released on a major label. Logo and artwork were digitally created by Xaay (Behemoth, Necrophagist, Nile) and is probably the most amazing vista to grace an underground death metal release in a very long time. With bands such as Obscura getting raving critics worldwide, there's a receptive audience for Cerebrum which is waiting to scrutinize this record. Lacerated Enemy Records is branching out into the more technical and progressive realms of death metal and Cerebrum might just be their most promising signing yet.
