Sinister - The Silent Howling Sinister are a true institution of the Dutch death metal scene, having formed in 1988 and disbanded in 2004. "The Silent Howling" is their second record after reforming in 2005 and subsequently releasing their commendable comeback "Afterburner" and the DVD "Prophecies Denied". Despite having only 7 tracks "The Silent Howling" clocks in at an impressive 45 minutes. Sounding as a mix between the band's watershed release "Hate" and "Aggressive Measures" this new album is another solid addition to Sinister's impressive backcatalogue. The title track is a spooky 10 minute doom epic rife with light use of church organs and acoustic guitar sections. Alex Paul (guitars), Bas van den Bogaard (bass) and drummer-turned-singer Aad Kloosterwaard are their usual self, although Kloosterwaard's work behind the mic has improved in leaps and bounds. New to the fold is drummer Erwin Van Den Eeden, who supersedes Fondlecorpse mainman Paul Beltman, and his work behind the kit definitely gives Sinister a modern touch in its technical onslaught. Through out the album there's a heavy use of samples which provide "The Silent Howling" with an almost cinematic quality. "The Silent Howling" was recorded at Soundlodge Studio, Germany (Defeated Sanity, Dew-Scented, God Dethroned, Resurrected) and this provides the band with a crystal clear, bass-heavy production that gives each instrument its required space without sacrificing any intensity. While this is by no means a second coming of the band's early classic albums "The Silent Howling" does show Sinister in a rejuvenated fashion adamantly staying their course while integrating some new elements in their pure death metal sound.
