Sinister - "Afterburner"
Nuclear Blast Records
Holland
After an almost 3 years absence of the international extreme metal scene Holland's longest running death metal institution returns with a rejuvenated line-up and a new record. Founding member Aad Kloosterwaard (also in Blastcorps and Infinited Hate), now on vocals, assembled a new line-up together with bassist-turned-guitarist Alex Paul (who's been in the band since '98), Paul Beltman (drums, ex-Judgement Day) and newly recruited bassist Bas van den Bogaard. "Afterburner" isn't the fastest, most technical release to date - but as a pure, slightly old school oriented offering it holds up very well to what other bands are releasing these days. The faster cuts such as 'The Grey Massacre', 'Altruistic Suicide', 'Men Down' or 'The Riot Crossfire' alternate beautifully with mid-tempo tracks like 'Presage Of the Mindless' and 'Flesh Of the Servant'. Kloosterwaard's debut behind the mic is a good one, he might not possess the most menacing or lowest grunt in the business but it serves its purpose well. Beltman's work behind the kit is incredible as he gives the songs the necessary punch and technical edge. In its fast sections the record reminds a bit of Malevolent Creation ("Will to Kill", "Warkult") while Autopsy can be heard in its doom pieces. Production courtesy of Andy Classen and his acclaimed Stage One Studio (Occult, Dew-Scented, Krisiun) is everything an extreme metal fan could dream of. Sinister have definitely delivered an admirable comeback album here that will appeal to their old fans as much as their new devotees.
