I had some material done already before the demise of Lord Belial. Some of the material was actually intended for the next Lord Belial album, but since we disbanded I changed around all of the ideas into new songs.
I don’t really consider it that much superior. But we KEPT the quality from 1st to 4th album, and that is something that is not easy to do! And I think there will come a 5th album that will kick just as much ass.
On the first sight this is just another traditional death metal act hailing from Croatia. What sets True apart from their peers is the integral use of a Croatian lute instrument called a tambura. This gives "Still Life" an ethnic folk feel, the intro is specifically designed to play out this strength. Tracks such as 'Once' display that True is able to merge their East-European folk affinity seamlessly with crushing US death metal of the early to mid '90s variety. The vocals of Darko Simunovic remind of (early) Asphyx while the music is mostly down the line of Cianide and Suffocation. It's a great contrast to hear no-frills dark death metal combined with a lighthearted instrument as the tambura. It is this contrast that makes True a great as it is. Where other bands would exploit the polka feeling the tambura brings to the music True does the exact opposite. "Still Life" is a great exploration of folk instrumentation and more traditional sounding death metal. While it's hard to do anything truly different in the death metal scene today, True are a breath of fresh wind in a scene oversaturated by clones and pretenders to the throne. If this band succeeds in combining the tambura with bone-crushing death metal they might just become the Croatian answer to Nile with their integration of ethnic instrumentation and straightforward death metal. Admittedly, they aren't just there yet, but it's good to hear bands daring to be original and trying something else than blindly copying their inspirations. On those merits alone True deserve to be heard.http://www.moonleerecords.comcomment itWouter 8
