Singularity is a proposed point in the technological future at which artificial intelligences become capable of augmenting and improving themselves, leading to an explosive growth in intelligence. Calgary, Alberta-based death metallers Divinity initially debuted with the self-released "Allegory" in 2007, a year later it was picked up for worldwide release by German mega-label Nuclear Blast Records. "The Singularity" builds upon the foundation laid down with "Allegory". Divinity sounds as a combination of Alchemist's psychedelic noodlings, Into Eternity's frantic classic metal leads/solos and Fear Factory's pioneering cyber metal. Another comparison could be Dutch technical metallers Textures. "Allegory" was plagued by the fact that it piled up too many ideas and influences within one song, often leading to incoherent results. "The Singularity" sidesteps this flaw by neatly dividing all ideas through out the length of the album. The vocals still seem to ape Arsis' James Malone, but seem to have more bite to them. The lush production by Sacha Laskow betrays a profound influence of Pestilence's death/jazz-fusion opus "Spheres" and Alchemist's wonderfully abstract "Austral Alien". With many bands now doing this particular genre Divinity isn't quite the revelation anymore compared to a few years ago, nevertheless is "The Singularity" one of the better records in this particular genre.http://www.nuclearblast.dekomentuj!Wouter 8
