Death metal is such a limitless genre. You can do whatever you'd like. It can be over the top technical or slow. Brutal or insane and it's all so good. When we made "Visions of Death" it just came out with a natural old school-ish vibe and that's great, but our newer material has a much more modern technical vibe. I love how death metal has evolved.
For me, death metal should be heavy as fuck, brutal (which doesn't necessarily mean "fast"), atmospheric and evil. If the "evil" thing is not there, you can't label yourself death metal, that's a fact. I'm so fucking close minded when it comes to metal music... I listen to the SAME hard rock, heavy, thrash, doom, death and black metal that I used to listen to 15 years ago.
Taking their name from the Lady of the Forest of Scandinavian folklore Belgian pagan black metallers Huldrefolk start off their second record "Morbide Elite" with a haunting intro piece 'Lijkenkarren' that includes light church organs, chiming funeral bells and industrial soundscapes thus creating an unsettling atmosphere on a convincing note. "Morbide Elite" is a semi-conceptual record about the pandemic black plague of the 14th century which killed approximately 25–50 million people in Europe. Like their debut "Eeuwenhout" Huldrefolk is heavily indebted to Enthroned and their debut "Prophecies Of Pagan Fire" in particular. The vocals of frontman Drang are equally as trollish and demented as ex-Enthroned shrieker Sabathan. Huldrefolk plays at a more deliberate pace with interesting dynamics making the fast parts sound even more hellish. Drummer Hammerman is similar to Cernunnos (ex-Enthroned), but his attack isn't nearly as diverse and versatile. The production by Mortsella Studio is bass-heavy and crunchy while being surprisingly clear-cut for underground black metal terms. Fleshmould bassist Didier Vancampo can be heard clearly through out this record. The pestilent medieval artwork was created by guitarist Waldschrat. Belgium once again proves its black metal worth.http://www.ironagerecords.comcomment itWouter 7
