W Emperor ceniłem zawsze epicki rozmach i przestrzeń.

Ihsahn chyba lubi Wagnera :)

EMPEROR THE COMPLETE WORKS
"I – Wrath of the Tyrant [1992] 45-RPM LP
The opening statement in Emperor official's oeuvre, "Wrath of the Tyrant" remains one of the rawest and most well-respected black metal demos of all-time. With band members ranging from only 16-18 years of age, Emperor recorded this on a four-track in one of their rehearsal rooms in rural Norway.
The demo was self-released via cassette through mailorder and the infamous Helvete shop in Oslo, and it became an underground hit. Various licenses saw the material edited several times, with the original intro swapped out and an outro randomly added or removed, depending upon the release. The production sound has also existed in various formats throughout time.
The band has chosen the more widely known “Introduction” [1:10] track that is in common, current circulation to represent the “official release” of this record. The “Intro” [0:55] track from the original cassette release will be visited later.
The production sound on the LP in “The Complete Works” is closer to that of the original self-released cassette and Head Not Found LP release. Whereas the LP in common current circulation is VERY LOUD and muddy to the point of clipping / blowing out and with minimal dynamics, this cut gives the originally eerie feel of overpowering, scathing vocals echoing atop a backdrop of mystical, humming guitarwork, allowing everything to breathe.

Track list:

Introduction [1:10 Version]
Ancient Queen
My Empire's Doom
Forgotten Centuries
Night of the Graveless Souls
Moon Over Kara-Shehr
Witches Sabbath
Lord of the Storms
Wrath of the Tyrant"

II – Rehearsal 1992 [1992] 45-RPM LP

The 2nd LP in Emperor “The Complete Works” Box Set marks the first-time official publication of an entire alternate playthrough of “The Wrath of the Tyrant” demo, prepared and furnished by the band themselves.

Simply dubbed “Rehearsal 1992,” this recording (mastered specifically for this set) now marks the earliest official publication with Faust on drums and Samoth on guitar. The original “Wrath of the Tyrant” demo featured Samoth on drums, due to lack of a suitable local black metal drummer at the time.

Even truer to the sound of a young band, honing their skills, many such recordings were recorded by the band in 1992 to send around in the underground tape-trading scene. Few of these tapes still exist outside the hands of the band themselves, and this is the first time the material has ever been chosen, prepared, and authorized for official publication.

The production sound on the rehearsal is raw but immediate, showcasing performance mistakes and all, bringing you right into the heart of the rehearsal room. The “Rehearsal 1992” LP features only the metal tracks from the era, as the intro and outro from the official “Wrath of the Tyrant” publication were recorded separately via keyboard by Samoth.

Track list:

Ancient Queen
My Empire's Doom
Forgotten Centuries
Night of the Graveless Souls
Moon Over Kara-Shehr
Witches Sabbath
Lord of the Storms
Wrath of the Tyrant

III – Emperor EP [1993] 45-RPM mLP

The first studio recordings of Emperor were released in their four song, self-titled EP in 1993. This EP marked many career-defining turning points for the band.

* The use of keyboards was present for the first time throughout their music.
* Samoth was finally officially the band's full-time guitarist.
* The strong and powerful Gustave Doré artwork.
* The band's affiliation with UK's Candlelight Records.
* The classic Emperor logo by Christophe Szpajdel appears.

Many fans of the band's early sound consider this the pinnacle moment in the band's career, while other fans who are more partial to the band's albums consider this the point where they finally began to touch upon genius.

The original EP features two re-recorded tracks from “The Wrath of the Tyrant,” alongside two new tracks. The mLP in common, current circulation is also extremely LOUD (same problem as “Wrath of the Tyrant”). The mLP in “The Complete Works” set takes down the volume considerably and gives much more room for the dynamics in the material, to bring it back to its original state.

Track list:

I Am the Black Wizards
Wrath of the Tyrant
Night of the Graveless Souls
Cosmic Keys to My Creations & Times

IV - The Akkerhaugen Tapes [1993] 45-RPM LP

The 4th LP in Emperor “The Complete Works” Box Set features early rehearsal and pre-production versions of five different songs from the period between the band's self-titled EP and their debut album. The tracks were recorded in their rehearsal room in Akkerhaugen, Norway, and showcase the group perfecting their songwriting towards their massive breakthrough album.

There are three raw, room-mic-recorded rehearsal tracks which have never been officially released before - “The Burning Shadows of Silence,” “Cosmic Keys to My Creations & Times,” and “Towards the Pantheon.”

Additionally, there are the three tracks recently released via CD/digital in the 'Nightside' 20th anniversary edition. That is a room-mic rehearsal of “I Am the Black Wizards,” as well as a full four-track pre-production recording of “The Majesty of the Nightsky” and also of “The Burning Shadows of Silence” without vocals.

The material is raw but an important historical document and is the first time this material has ever hit vinyl.

Track list:

The Burning Shadows of Silence
Cosmic Keys to My Creations & Times
Towards the Pantheon
I Am the Black Wizards
The Majesty of the Nightsky (Pre-prod)
The Burning Shadows of Silence (Pre-prod)
V - In the Nightside Eclipse [1994] 45-RPM 2xLP
The infamous Emperor debut album marked not only a massive propulsion forward for the band, but also a grand statement for black metal as a whole. This is the recording that catapulted the group into the international spotlight as one of the key players in the Norwegian black metal uprising, eventually sweeping through much of mainstream media.
The record showcases the band's early sound at its most polished, driving the level of dark mysticism to intense heights.
Also riddled with myriad versions of production, the band requested to go back to the sound of the very first pressing which they claim to be the most official version. On later wide releases, the album was remastered and heavily compressed, which the band claims is not accurate to the original sound.
Instead of including version upon version of the same record, it was chosen to use the initial audio as the jumping off point. With this in mind, this is the quietest material in the set, meaning that you need to crank the volume; but once done, the keyboards will soar wider than ever before. It is very clear that the LP in common, current circulation has not been properly optimized for vinyl, as it sounds very thin. This 2xLP version gives perspective into how the material was originally intended to sound. Not just an attack, but eerie and all-encompassing.
The album appears in its first pressing track listing without any bonus tracks.
Track list:
Introduction
Into the Infinity of Thoughts
The Burning Shadows of Silence
Cosmic Keys to My Creations & Times
Beyond the Great Vast Forest
Towards the Pantheon
The Majesty of the Nightsky
I Am the Black Wizards
Inno A Satana
VI – As the Shadows Rise [1994] 45-RPM 7”

The lone 7” in Emperor official “The Complete Works” Box Set is a recreation of the original three-song 45-RPM “As the Shadows Rise” EP, the first publication on 7” since 1994.

The brilliant EP features three studio re-recorded tracks from “Wrath of the Tyrant,” recorded before “In the Nightside Eclipse” but released half-a-year later.

This was Emperor's only material to be released via Samoth's own label – Nocturnal Art Productions. Featuring much more expansive sound than the band's original demo, the EP provides soaring keyboards on the classic track “The Ancient Queen,” a much more in-your-face performance of “Lord of the Storms,” and infinitely echoing howls on “Witches Sabbath.”

A small but essential piece of Emperor history.

Track list:

The Ancient Queen
Lord of the Storms
Witches Sabbath

VII – Reverence [1997] 45-RPM mLP

After a several year hiatus and lineup changes on bass and drums, Emperor returned in early 1997 with a three song EP to announce the coming of their long-awaited sophomore album. The band had progressed an incredible amount since their early material; showcasing new technical elements which both alienated them from some of their early, raw black metal audience and opened them up to legions of new fans. Now present were constant and intense tremolo-picked runs up and down the guitar, blasting on drums, and neo-classical keyboard compositions throughout.

Leading the EP is “The Loss and Curse of Reverence,” a massive track which has become one of the band's signature songs. Unbeknownst to some, the two latter tracks on the EP (“In Longing Spirit” and “Opus A Satana”) are not part of the original release of their second album, “Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk.” They only appeared on international releases of the album and were finally published in the UK in later re-releases.

Despite being released again later, the three tracks were featured here in a uniquely pre-mastered state, only reaching “final form” with the international release of “Anthems ...”

Thus, the “Reverence” EP is kept in its original version.

This is the first time this EP has been pressed on vinyl since 1997. The cut in the box set is very smooth and faithful to the original material, compared to the distorted 1997 cut.

Track list:

The Loss and Curse of Reverence
In Longing Spirit
Opus A Satana
VIII – Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk [1997] 45-RPM 2xLP

The definitive turning point in the Emperor catalog, which saw the band not only slowly shifting styles but also becoming a “household name” within the entirety of the extreme metal scene.

The “Reverence” EP set the stage for the sophomore album that some consider the band's masterwork. “Anthems ...” showcases a mixture of prolonged technical ferocity against neoclassical flourishes and drawn out portions of pensive darkness, bringing vast extra dimensions into the Emperor soundscape.

The version presented in the box is the original 8-song UK release (bonus tracks from the reissues to be visited later). A very basic arrangement: a slow burn-in intro – “Alsvartr (The Oath)” – leads to 35 minutes of some of the most blistering material ever recorded, leading to a slow-burn outro – “The Wanderer.”

The cut on the material in the set is still incendiary, owing to a high sense of presence in the mix (the way the material has always been). But it is less compressed and quieter than the vinyl release in common, current circulation; the new cut showcasing more separation in the mix and a wider stereo image.

In my opinion, one of the greatest albums in the history of metal in its greatest form.

Track list:

Alsvartr (The Oath)
Ye Entrancemperium
Thus Spake the Nightspirit
Ensorcelled by Khaos
The Loss and Curse of Reverence
The Acclamation of Bonds
With Strength I Burn
The Wanderer

--

IX – IX Equilibrium [1999] 45-RPM 2xLP

Two years after “Anthems …,” the third album in Emperor's arsenal arrived. “IX Equilibrium” witnessed the band developing their sound even further from their raw black metal roots into an amalgam of extreme styles that wowed both critics and fans but alienated the band further from their original fanbase, deeply splitting discussions about Emperor to this day. Alchemical concepts, avant garde riffing, theatrical organs; sounds that had been little explored within black metal before and which would be developed even further within the band.

“IX Equilibrium” is another incredible and subversive entry in the band's catalog, but it proved to not only be the second-to-last album for the band as a unit but also the last one where the unstoppable team of Samoth and Ihsahn would write music together.

The album has sparked discussions about its production before, as it has always rested in the high end of the frequency spectrum. The cut in the set retains the original sound, all the while balancing out, widening, and bringing rise to the low end with a very nice stereo image across the board.

The version presented in the box is the original 9-song UK release, opening on one of the band's most scathing indictments - “Curse You All Men!” - and ending on an unmentioned and untitled burst of ambiance, erupting from the fade out of exotic finger-picking on “Of Blindness & Subsequent Seers.”

Track list:

Curse You All Men!
Decrystallizing Reason
An Elegy of Icaros
The Source of Icon E
Sworn
Nonus Aequilibrium
The Warriors of Modern Death
Of Blindness & Subsequent Seers
X – Emperial Live Ceremony [2000] 45-RPM 2xLP

There is only one professionally-recorded and official document of Emperor's blistering live performance while still together as a recording band.

Arriving in 2000 as the “Emperial Live Ceremony,” the gig was recorded live at the London Astoria – one of the most iconic London venues of the 80s and 90s – only a few months after the release of “IX Equilibrium.” One of the most well-known and well-respected black metal live albums, this document represents the band at the pinnacle of their abilities – dexterous, tight, and furious.

The concert focuses heavily on tracks from “IX Equilibrium” and “Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk,” as opposed to later concerts which focused more attention on earlier material. The track list appears in its original form.

Track list:

Curse You All Men!
Thus Spake the Nightspirit
I Am the Black Wizards
An Elegy of Icaros
With Strength I Burn
Sworn
Night of the Graveless Souls
Inno A Satana
Ye Entrancemperium

XI – Prometheus - The Discipline of Fire & Demise [2001] 45-RPM 2xLP

Emperor's fourth and final album arrived only seven short years after their debut album. Having made their indelible mark upon black metal and the extreme music scene within such a short time span makes the band's unreachable mysticism that much more palpable.

“Prometheus” sounds almost nothing like “In the Nightside Eclipse,” bringing in a far more progressive metal atmosphere. The album takes many of its cues from “IX Equilibrium,” amplifying its theatricality and experimental arrangements threefold. Add on top that it's purely written and arranged by Ihsahn – this is the only material by the band that features no writing credits from founding member Samoth. Differences of opinion about musical development within the band not only led to this album but also caused its breakup a few months later.

The album was very well-received by critics upon release. But it remains shrouded in extremes amongst fans – people seem to either love it or hate it.

Personally, I find it as exciting as anything Emperor ever created. “In the Wordless Chamber” is as gripping as “Inno A Satana,” “Thus Spake the Nightspirit,” “Curse You All Men!” and many more. All albums and 'periods' within the band remain as worthy of worship as any other. And “Prometheus” seems to be very far ahead of its time, as every year fans come around to it more and more.

This was the last time Emperor would record new music together. They both started and ended with an explosion. One of the few bands whose catalogs remain untouched by mediocrity or the ill effects of aging. All of it still fresh as it was on the day it was released.

Track list:

The Eruption
Depraved
Empty
The Prophet
The Tongue of Fire
In the Wordless Chamber
Grey
He Who Sought the Fire
Thorns on My Grave
XII – Live Inferno [2009] 45-RPM 3xLP

Having already achieved a lifetime of success by the young ages of 26/27, Emperor official disbanded shortly after the release of their fourth album “Prometheus” in 2001.

Without warning, the band regrouped four years later for a string of hugely-attended festival dates that showcased their incredibly-matured performance skills. As tight and searing as ever, fans turned up in massive numbers to witness the band in top form.

Emperor's flawless performance at Oslo's Inferno Festival in 2006 was captured and eventually released in 2009 under the title “Live Inferno.” The performance opens on ten minutes of “In the Nightside Eclipse” material, eventually winding its way through multiple tracks from “Anthems,” “Equilibrium,” “Wrath of the Tyrant,” back through “Nightside” and even throwing in a track from “Prometheus” for good measure.

Perfectly performed, the material provides a fantastic and seasoned counterpoint to 2000's “Emperial Live Ceremony.”

Track list:

Infinity Burning (Medley)
Cosmic Keys to My Creations & Times
Thus Spake the Nightspirit
An Elegy of Icaros
Curse You All Men!
Wrath of the Tyrant
With Strength I Burn
Towards the Pantheon
The Majesty of the Nightsky
The Loss and Curse of Reverence
In the Wordless Chamber
Inno A Satana
I Am the Black Wizards
Ye Entrancemperium
Opus A Satana

XIII – Live at Wacken Open Air 2006 'A Night of Emperial Wrath' [2009] 45-RPM 3xLP

The last official release from Emperor was their incredible performance at Wacken in 2006. Occurring as part of the same short tour cycle as the Inferno appearance; the Wacken gig has a slightly altered track listing, different sound, and a slightly different energy. In choosing which performance to include in “The Complete Works,” it became impossible to declare one gig better than the other. So, the decision was made in honor of completeness to master and include both.

This concludes the previously official releases of Emperor official, and we have one more massive piece of vinyl to go.

Track list:

Infinity Burning (Medley)
Cosmic Keys to My Creations & Times
Thus Spake the Nightspirit
An Elegy of Icaros
Curse You All Men!
With Strength I Burn
Towards the Pantheon
The Majesty of the Nightsky
The Loss and Curse of Reverence
In the Wordless Chamber
I Am the Black Wizards
Inno A Satana
XIV – Bonus Tracks & Rarities [2015] 45-RPM 3xLP

The final vinyl release within the Emperor “The Complete Works” Box Set is a brand new triple LP anthology of all the loose Emperor tracks that were originally part of larger works, each LP representing a different series of tracks.

LP 3 is a collection of alternate versions of songs released in various compilations or re-releases of albums, including the original “Wrath of the Tyrant” cassette tape intro and vinyl outro, as well as the infamous “Moon Over Kara-Shehr” rehearsal with Hellhammer on drums. Also present are the bonus tracks from re-releases of "Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk" and "IX Equilibrium."

XV – Into the Infinity of Darkness: 1991-2016

And the final major chapter in the Emperor “The Complete Works” Box Set is a brand new 92-page art book, featuring the story of the band as told by author Dayal Patterson (“Black Metal: Evolution of the Cult,” “Black Metal: The Cult Never Dies”).

The story features Patterson's own take on the arc of the band, as well as interviews conducted with the band members and those related to the band over the years.

Additionally, Emperor has archived and submitted hundreds of images (some previously published, some previously unpublished) to be sprinkled throughout the text. Loads of promo photo outtakes, personal photos, as well as magazine clippings, gig flyers, and more.
Emperor “The Complete Works” Box Set – TECHNICAL INFORMATION

Before launching into the visuals of the set, I'd like to explain a bit about concepts in the design.

During initial discussions, all signs pointed to the idea of unifying the material by hiring an artist to draw new art for everything. A list of known and semi-known artists within the metal scene was created, and there was a lot of discussion between the band and myself on who to commission. We ran through test phases with about 5-10 artists, which elicited about 15 different pieces of art. But for some reason, despite a few very nice drawings in their own respect, no one managed to capture the spirit of the band.

After many stressful months of rejection, the entire idea had to be scrapped and developed again from scratch. I polled the band on what kind of material they did and didn't want to see, and the end result was a simple but daunting reply: black and silver. All I knew was that an interesting set should be built around black and silver.

I personally threw a design concept atop the pile, and it was suddenly the only one that was agreed on by everyone. Therefore, the set was designed in-house this time (layouts done in conjunction with Travis Smith) with no new art. We unified the entire discography with carefully-considered layouts only.

To explain the concept – each release is denoted with its own associated roman numeral (being very careful to have “IX Equilibrium” hit number IX).

The roman numerals are not printed on the outer jackets, but instead they are cut away (die cut).

The original front cover artwork for each album is printed onto heavyweight inner sleeve 'disco bags' on Side A, with full color bleed of the cover's dominant color on Side B. Side C features a 'silver-ized' version of the original front cover, with a silver flood on Side D.

The idea is that through the front cover roman numeral on each jacket, you are able swap out and slightly 'change' the color palette of the set, unifying it into four different possibilities – original cover version / color flood version / silver cover version / silver flood version.

All outer jackets will be printed on super ultra-heavyweight 425gsm triple gatefold jackets (to give you an idea – heavyweight is normally 350gsm and normal weight is 300gsm) with the finest coating available – anti-scratch matte lamination, which is silky smooth to the touch and difficult to damage. The exterior of the jackets will be full black flood with soft-metallic pantone silver printing. Most of the gatefolds will also contain a spot gloss (a lone area of extreme gloss) for the Icon E shield. The reverse of the gatefolds (inner pockets) will be printed flood black, so that when no records are in the jackets, the roman numerals will feature an alternate shade of black. The inner gatefold panels will feature panels of art from the album's original release (note: we are using the original art as it was processed in the 90s, so due to these techniques, some of the album art is already naturally soft).

The inner sleeves for the set will be printed on heavyweight 250gsm 'disco bags' (basically, higher-quality inner sleeves) also with the silky smooth anti-scratch matte lamination, as well as full-flood color printing inside the sleeves.

The center labels will also feature the motif of full black flood with soft-metallic silver-pantone printing, unified throughout the set.

As warned before, the set is very minimalist in nature. But also an explosion on the eyes. Every part was considered down to the finest detail and should pack up very neatly, and I hope you will like what you see.

The band was fully involved in all of the decision-making within the set, and this was built towards a slick representation of honoring their work instead of trying to apply new meaning to it.

As far as I'm concerned, no expense was spared in trying to make this the most deluxe set possible, and I do not know of anything like it in terms of scope.

Additionally, I am aware that some people are having difficulties waiting for the price, limitation, payment methods, etc. There will be a very full and long post about all of that tomorrow (Saturday). Please tune in then. The art reveal will begin on Sunday.
